Rewarding country walks for all abilities

The Forest of Bowland is criss-crossed with miles of footpaths, bridleways and ancient tracks.

Alfred Wainwright described the epic trek along the former Roman Road from Hornby to Slaidburn as one of the finest moorland walks in the country and the area has a range of walks to suit all ambitions and abilities.

From challenging high-level walks to easy-going half-day hikes and leisurely riverside rambles, there are dozens of routes to explore – certainly enough to provide plenty of variety over the course of a weekend break.

Walking provides ample opportunity to admire Bowland’s rugged gritstone landscapes, verdant pastureland and ancient woodland – along with the diverse wildlife that makes its home here.

And at the end of an exhilarating day on the trail, a refreshing drink and perhaps a bite to eat at a welcoming country inn is all the more enjoyable.

Walk of the Week: Hodder Bank Fell
