Bowland activity holidays

The Forest of Bowland is a stimulating environment in which to embrace new experiences and learn new skills.

A growing number of providers offer training and tuition in a wide spectrum of outdoor activities and traditional skills, with some providing short residential courses.

As you’d expect in such an idyllic natural playground, traditional outdoor activities such as hiking, navigation, kayaking, mountain biking and rock climbing are very much to the fore. But how about trying your hand at foraging, distilling gin or artisan cheese-making?

More energetic souls may want to hone their downhill skills on the MTB trails at Gisburn Forest Hub or – for a complete change of pace – learn the gentle art of fly fishing, dry stone walling, hedge-laying or basket weaving.

And the Forest of Bowland really is a year-round destination for learning. In winter, look out for Dark Skies experiences and workshops which help participants find their way around the night sky.

Spring brings the opportunity to feed new-born lambs, summer is peak season for all manner of adventurous activities while autumn is the best time of year to find food for free on a foraging course in the Forest.

Goosnargh Gin

Multi-award winning Goosnargh Gin is lovingly crafted by Richard and Rachel Trenchard at their micro-distillery, based at the foot of Beacon Fell, on the edge of the Forest of Bowland AONB, in the parish of Goosnargh, Lancashire. Our gins are distilled in small batches by hand by us, using traditional copper alembic stills. All our gins are Chapters of our story and are created and produced by us to reflect the diversity of the area in which we live and work.

Chapter Four – Hay Time is a seasonal release and the result of a collaboration between ourselves, the Forest of Bowland AONB team and Peter Blackwell, who farms at Bell Sykes, Slaidburn. The blend of freshly cut botanicals harnesses the meadows’ rich diversity. A donation from each bottle sold will support educational projects in the AONB, promoting the preservation and restoration of meadows.

We also offer immersive foraging and distilling days in the spring and autumn. These days allow participants to learn more about botanicals in the local area, which they will collect with expert forager Adrian Rose of North West Bushcraft and ourselves. After lunch each person will create their own bottle of gin, including the botanicals they have collected, taking charge of their own mini still.

Our aim as a company is to exist in harmony with our surrounds, while promoting the area through our work and products. Our gins are available directly from us or from a number of local and national independent stockists.
